Flo Music : Mobile Music Sharing

Flo was a revolutionary social music app that placed the emphasis on social. Through an innovative use of ad-hoc networks and popular streaming music apps, users could create a "virtual jukebox" using songs from everyone’s phones. When the music played, it synced across all phones, turning them into one unified loudspeaker. If louder sound was needed, no problem—users could connect the host phone to an external speaker (Bluetooth or hardwired) and get the party started. As the experience director on this ground-breaking project, I oversaw and led: Product Naming, Brand Development, Product Strategy & Positioning, Workshops, and UX / UI Design and copywriting.
From a Simple Problem to an Innovative App
When Space Monkey, LLC came to us, all they had was a problem and a rough idea for how to solve it. As avid hunters and fishermen, they often found themselves in the wilderness, with a lot of downtime, and few options for entertainment, other than their mobile phones.
Playing music on their phones helped pass the time, but the biggest problem was that mobile phone speakers weren't loud enough to be enjoyed by a group (pre-bluetooth speakers), so they used a paper-towel roll and cups to amplify the music, similar to the photo below. After doing this for a while, they came to the realization that relying on the playlist of one person, limited the enjoyment of music for the group, so they then asked "How can we allow everyone to contribute to the playlist?" And from these two simple questions, the full idea for Flo was born.

It simply makes a lot of sense to use the cloud, and cell or wifi networks to crowdsource the playlist live, creating themes and moods. Flo Music allows just that, as a platform for all to contribute song selections at a social gathering.
